How to Decorate a Small, Square Bedroom

When confronted with decorating a small space, such as a small, square bedroom, it is best to remember that less is more. This means avoiding clutter, such as too many floor lamps, bookcases, piles of clothing or magazines, or any items that contribute to making the room appear even smaller than it is. Work with the wall space for housing books and other items and keep furniture placement in mind to make the most out of the small space.

Things You'll Need

  • Bedroom furniture
  • Materials for wall shelves
  • Posters
  • Prints
  • Photos
  • Tapestry
  • Wall light fixtures
  • Table lamps
  • Area rugs
  • Throw pillows
  • Curtains

Arrange bedroom furniture in either a square shape or angled design depending on your preference. For example, if you are using the square design, place your bed up against one wall, your desk or bureau against the wall opposite or perpendicular to the bed, and any other chairs or tables against the remaining walls. Note that an angled design may take up more space in the room, especially if you angle the larger furniture pieces, such as the bed. You can also choose to fit your bed against one wall and angle the rest of the furniture. Remember to keep large furniture pieces away from windows; instead place a chair and small table near a window.

Use the wall space. Erect shelving units on the walls to avoid placing bookcases around the room, which only make small bedrooms appear more cluttered. Use the remaining wall space for framed posters and prints, favorite photos and tapestries. If you are hanging tapestries, put a dark-colored tapestry against the wall opposite the doorway, which will help give the room depth. Also use the wall space for installing light fixtures rather than using floor lamps, which take up more space. Table lamps are another option that will not take up space on your bedroom floor.

Place one or two area rugs in the room as desired, along with other decorative touches, such as throw pillows for your bed and light fabric cushions.

Keep the color scheme light and neutral and add color with accessories; dark and strong colors make a space look smaller.
