How to Design a Master Bedroom & Bath

Sketch a master bedroom and bath you would build if budget were no object. Start with your favorite furniture pieces, rugs, accent pieces and bath fixtures. Include items such as a large garden tub or walk-in shower with sit-down bench. By creating the best room you can possibly imagine, you can figure out ways to make substitutions for less important items, and buy the large items that really matter.
Designate a budget you can afford in creating the area. Sketch furniture pieces you must have in the sleeping area and new features you'd really like in the bath area. If you can't afford new pieces, use pieces you already have and refinish them. For example, you can paint odd pieces with semi-gloss black paint to make them harmonize seamlessly. If you don't need to replace bath fixtures, considering adding a hot tub in one corner. Again, spend on large items that add pizazz.
Pick out curtains, a bedspread and rugs you like in catalogs or in person. Select a neutral color from these fabric items. Use this color to paint the walls of the master bedroom and bath. For example, you might select a pale yellow. Use this color on at least one wall in the bedroom and one in the bathroom to tie everything together. The walls and trim molding should pick up color from fabric and rugs in a tasteful and subtle way.
Design the space to include crown molding and new closet doors. Even if you are renovating space, you want the new suite and bathroom to look completely new. New woodwork will make it look refurbished. To continue with the idea of making the space look new, add an upholstered chair. Buy new throw pillows and artwork, even if inexpensive, to freshen the room. Change a bed to face in a different direction, or paint the old bath vanity a new shade.
Work on the closet space and storage space to hide all the clutter. Design the bedroom to look open and relaxed by keeping all papers, clothes and junk out of sight. Build under-the-bed storage if necessary, or buy plastic storage to slide under the beds. Create a storage system in the closet with wire shelving and small chests that stack for hiding small clothing items. Give the suite a well-organized feel throughout. Carry this organization into the bath area by installing shelving or closets to hide additional clutter.
