How to Decorate a Bedroom for Two Girls

Decorating a room for two girls can be a challenge. You have to consider the style of each girl, plus the need for personal space and organization. Even a small room can be shared if you utilize space-saving furniture and two girls can happily share a space that reflects both their sisterhood and their individuality.

Things You'll Need

  • Matching beds
  • Bed linens
  • Two desks
  • Two corkboards
  • Acrylic paint
  • Bookshelves
  • Area rugs
  • Photo
  • Room dividers

Consider the furniture and room layout. For two girls you can either divide the room in half with two separate beds, or for a smaller room you can use a bunk bed unit to house both girls. This will be your most crucial decision as it dictates the space allowed for the girls' other furnishings.

Match furniture. When you are decorating for two girls in a shared room "separate but equal" should be your mantra. Purchase matching bed frames (or the bunk bed unit) and get coordinating dressers for each girl to give the room a unified and organized look.

Allow for some individuality with the bedding. Ask each girl to select her own linens and comforters, and encourage them to select colors that go together for a more attractive room. To maintain greater design control allow them to select novelty sheets, but purchase matching comforters so the beds match when they are made up.

Create individual work spaces. Even if the girls share a computer in their room, they should each have a small desk space to store their schoolbooks, homework and craft projects. Place a homework computer in the center on a separate desk or in another room of the house so you can monitor its usage.

Place a corkboard over each desk space and paint the girls name across the top. A corkboard will give girls space to post photos of friends and notes. Simply paint the names on the board with a small paintbrush and acrylic paint in their favorite color.

Avoid clutter by placing some bookshelves high in the room for collectibles and old toys. Designate a shelf for each girl and manage excess clutter and toys in under-bed containers.

Create a visual boundary for the girls by purchasing small area rugs to place next to the beds or in front of their desks. This provides the girls with a visual cue that gives them a sense of responsibility and ownership in their room.

Take a photo of the girls together to post on the outside of the door along with their names. This will help the girls see the room as a shared space and may help them bond in joint ownership.

Provide privacy for squabbling girls with a room divider screen. Although this visually cuts the room in half and diminishes some space, girls who don't get along will enjoy the feel of having their own room and are then responsible for cleaning only their half of the room.
