Inexpensive Room Divider Ideas

Create two or more rooms out of one room in your home with inexpensive room dividers. The type of divider you choose will depend on what it is used for. If two teen girls share a bedroom, but want their own space, the divider will be different than if the room will hold two home offices. Choose an idea that will work for you, your family, and your home.

Paint
Use different-colored paint to create the distinction of two separate spaces. Paint one side blue and the other green, for example. If you must use the same color paint throughout the room, you can use different-colored designs on either sides of the wall. Use stencils to create stars or other shapes. You can also measure the wall and create pink stripes on one side and purple stripes on the other. The colors should reflect the personalities of the people in the room or the functions of the room.

Folding Screens
Folding screens are a terrific and decorative means of dividing a room. There are many more styles than the traditional Asian design. Some are comprised of individual photo frames so that each side of the frame can have different photos and a different look. Some folding screens are made of solid wood of many colors. Shop online for a neutral sort of folding screen that both people in the room can agree on. If the room is for one person with two purposes, the folding screen can be strategically placed to divide, for example, a workspace from a bedroom by placing the screen along one side of the bed for privacy.

Beads
Beads are a great way to personalize a space and give it character as well as implying a divide in a room. If your room has an exotic feel, beads are a great statement as well. Several can be bought to divide a room completely in half, shading it entirely. Beads can also be used as an accent to the room divider by using them as curtains over the windows. Some beads form designs, some are solid colors, some have a more international feel to them. This just depends on your taste and how the room feels.

Curtains
Curtains are an inexpensive means to divide a room into separate spaces. Measure the width and height of the space you plan to hang the curtain before you go shopping. You can buy some online or in a store as long and as wide as you need. Laundry line cord or bamboo is a unique way to hang them. Curtains are also easily made --- simply pick some fabric from a fabric store, fold the top half of the curtain over about one inch, then sew, glue, or staple the fabric together. This makes a loop with which to string up the curtains. You can even take two different colors of curtains and sew them together entirely to give each side of a room a different color.

Bookcase
Bookcases are a very popular and practical way to separate one room into two spaces. They can be stacked up very high or elongated to completely split a room. This is also a great help in allowing more space for storage. If bookcases face the bedroom side of a room, clothing can easily be folded and stored on its shelves. If the bookcases are facing an office, they can hold paperwork, office supplies, and electronic equipment. If the bookcase has a back, it can be painted to reflect the artistic feel of the room that the bookcase's back is facing. You can also use cubby-styled bookcases to have storage for both sides.
