How to Design a Swimming Pool Cabana

A cabana is a small building or a temporary tentlike structure adjacent to a swimming pool. In the case of cabanas at resort pools or on the beach, the tent creates a private space. A backyard cabana can double as a guesthouse and can feature all the amenities swimmers need so that they don't have to go into the house. Decide what your cabana will be used for before you start and plan a design that complements your landscaping.

Things You'll Need
  • Kitchen appliances
  • Bath fixtures
  • Washer/dryer
  • Flooring
  • Glass doors
  • Patio materials
  • Plants
  • Awning
  • Outdoor shower
Design an open floor plan with a full bath and a galley kitchen. Equip the kitchen with a standard refrigerator, a double sink and a microwave oven. Install a single-drawer dishwasher under the counter.

Reserve room for a closet that contains a stackable washer and dryer for cleaning towels and robes. Floor the building with water-resistant materials that are also nonslip, such as heavy-duty carpeting or rubber flooring.

Use floor-to-ceiling glass along the side facing the pool. Sliding doors or French doors that can be opened wide make the cabana inviting. Other door options are glass doors that pivot in the center or pocket doors that disappear into the wall.

Lay a natural-stone patio in front of the cabana that stretches to the pool deck. Decorate the patio with planter boxes or large terra-cotta pots filled with fragrant plants that repel pests, such as marigolds and lavender.

Install a retractable awning over the patio or design a lanai with climbing vines trained along it. A covering will extend the use of the patio for entertaining in inclement weather and provide protection from the sun.

Tuck an outdoor shower at one end of the cabana so swimmers can quickly rinse off pool water before they go inside. Attach fat wooden pegs to the outside of the building for hanging terry-cloth robes and towels.
