How to Hang Pictures in a Living Room

A living room is the focal point of every home. It is the room where the family spends most of its time and where guests are welcomed. One of the best ways to enhance the look of your living room is to display artwork on its walls in a proper and visually-appealing manner. Although hanging pictures is not an exact science, there are certain rules that significantly affect the final result of the artwork assembly. If you want to improve the look of your living room, you may want to know how to decorate its wall with pictures.

Things You'll Need

  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Tape measure
  • Masking tape
  • Power drill
  • Screws

Frame any pictures you intend to use that are not already framed. If you want to add to your collection, you can use vintage posters or old postcards and frame them in elaborate or minimalistic frames. Don't be afraid to experiment when it comes to framing. Use retro frames with modern graphics, bright colors with black and white photography and futuristic sleek frames with traditional paintings.

Arrange the pictures on the floor to get a general idea of the arrangement. Try different arrangements for you pictures. Pay attention to the proportions and different sizes of the pictures as you want to achieve balance in your arrangement. Place the biggest picture in the middle of the arrangement and put the smaller-sized pictures around the big picture. If you are hanging same-sized pictures, you can hang them vertically or horizontally in a single line.

Choose the wall where you will hang the pictures. The wall should be large enough to accommodate all the pictures you are hanging.

Draw a thin and light horizontal line on your living room wall, using a pencil, a measuring tape or a ruler and a level. You can simply attach a piece of masking tape along the wall. Use a level to make sure the tape is absolutely horizontal. This line will be your guide in arranging your living room pictures. This is where you will align the bottom edge of the picture frames that you will hang in your living room. Make as many guidelines as you need and follow your arrangement.

Hang the biggest picture, making sure that its bottom edge is aligned with the line you made on the wall. You can put the biggest picture of your collection at the bottom, to draw the eye and anchor the weight of the whole assembly. As you align the frame on the guide, mark the exact area where you will drill the screw to hang the picture. The area should be around the middle of the frame, about two or three inches down from the top edge, depending on the size of the picture you are hanging. Drill in screws through the marks using a power drill. The frames should have a wire attached to the back that will hang from the screws.

Arrange and hang the rest of the pictures around the biggest picture.
