How to Make a Tufted Bedroom Bench

- 30-inch long by 15-inch wide by 2-inch thick hardwood board
- 30-inch long by 15-inch wide by 1/4-inch thick hardwood board
- Medium-grade sandpaper
- Gloves

- 4 decorative legs

- 1/8-inch drill bit

- Upholstery foam

Sand a 30-inch long by 15-inch wide by 2-inch thick hardwood board and a 30-inch long by 15-inch wide by 1/4-inch thick hardwood board with medium-grade sandpaper. Clean away the sanding debris.
Stain one side of each board, and the edges of the 1/4-inch thick board. Stain the four decorative legs. The 2-inch thick board is the bench seat; the 1/4-inch thick board is the underside cover for the seat, after it is tufted. Let the stain dry.
Measure and mark the 2-inch board every 3 inches along the length and the width. The marks are where the bench seat will be tufted; adjust the measurements if you prefer a different space between each tuft. Drill 1/8-inch holes through the bench seat over each mark.
Cover each hole over the stained side of the bench seat with a strip of duct tape. The duct tape will hold the knots in place as you tuft the seat.
Cut a section of upholstery foam to fit the top of the bench seat. It’s easier to cut upholstery foam with an electric knife. Attach the foam to the unstained side of the bench seat with spray adhesive.
Cut a section of fabric and batting to fit the top, sides and 4 inches of the underside of the bench seat. Wrap the batting over the top of the seat and attach it to the underside with a staple gun. Wrap the fabric over the batting and attach it the same way.
Thread the upholstery needle and insert it through one of the holes in the bench seat, from the duct tape all the way through the fabric. Slide a button over the needle as it exits the fabric. Reinsert the needle back down through the fabric, batting foam and wood to exit the duct tape adjacent to where it began. Pull the thread taut so that the button sinks into the foam to create a tuft. Knot the thread together to secure the tuft. Repeat this step for each hole in the bench seat.
Attach the 1/4-inch wooden board onto the bench seat, over the duct tape and knotted threads, with screws.
Attach the four decorative legs to each corner of the bedroom bench with screws and a small L bracket.
