How to Paint Bedroom Furniture Black

Painting bedroom furniture can give you a whole new look to the same furniture so you don't have to purchase an entirely new bedroom set. Black paint gives you a modern look and is very functional because it will match just about anything you decide to place in the room. Preparing furniture for black paint may require less preparation than painting furniture using a lighter color.

Things You'll Need

  • Electric drill with bits
  • Screwdriver
  • Mild dish detergent
  • Sponge
  • Water bucket
  • Trisodium phosphate, a heavy-duty cleaner
  • Rubber gloves
  • Soft scrub brush
  • Protective eye wear
  • Dust mask
  • 120-grit sandpaper (optional)
  • Tack cloth (optional)
  • Drop cloth
  • Black paint
  • Metal paint can opener
  • Wooden stir stick
  • Paint tray
  • Paint brushes
  • Spray primer (optional)
  • Paint rollers
  • Varnish (optional)
  • Cleaning rags (optional)

Use a screwdriver or electric drill to remove any hardware from the bedroom furniture you will be painting. Slide out any drawers that can be removed.

Use a soft scrub brush to clean the furniture with a mixture of dish detergent and warm water, or use trisodium phosphate for heavier cleaning. If you clean with the trisodium phosphate, wear protective eye equipment and rubber gloves.

Repair scratches, rough spots and chipped paint by using 120-grit sandpaper over the bedroom furniture until smooth. Wipe a tack cloth over the sanded areas to remove the sanding dust.

Put down a drop cloth in the area where you will be painting. The drop cloth keeps a barrier between any paint accidents and your flooring.

Open the black paint with your metal paint can opener, stir it with the wood stir stick and dip your paintbrush into the paint. Paint an inconspicuous spot on one of the furniture pieces. Let it dry as required by the directions on the can.

Determine if the black paint bonded to the furniture. If there is absorbed or missing paint, then you will need a primer to cover the furniture to give the paint a bondable surface.

Spray the primer over all surfaces of the bedroom furniture in an even sweeping motion from left to right, creating a smooth surface with no primer runs.

Apply the black paint to the furniture starting from the inside corners to the outside. Paint the flat surfaces with a paint roller for a smooth and even application. Let the first coat of paint dry as suggested on the paint can before proceeding.

Apply a second coat of black paint to your bedroom furniture if the first coat reveals runs or thin paint.

Complete the painting of your furniture by adding a coat of varnish to the furniture. The varnish protects the furniture from water stains, scratches and chipping paint and gives a shine to the furniture.
