How to Decorate a Skateboarding-Themed Bedroom

Unlike other bedroom themes that kids tend to outgrow, a skateboarding theme appeals to kids of all ages, even into adulthood. What started as pastime for kids in the 1960s grew into a subculture by the 1970s, inspired the legendary Venice Beach skateboard team known as the “Z Boys.” Their surf style, vertical skateboarding in empty swimming pools and the concrete reservoirs of Los Angeles inspired the design of subsequent skate parks and generations of new extreme skaters, evolving the sport into a lifestyle.

Bedding and Color Schemes
When you're doing a complete bedroom makeover, start with the focal point, the bed. Use skateboard-themed bedding, which you can find in a variety of colors, such as blue with contrasting orange, gray and black, blue and green, or multicolored patterns with images of boards and silhouettes of skaters. Have a custom duvet cover made from a personal photo of your skater in action. Pull one to three colors from the bedding or from his favorite skateboard for the color scheme. It’s typically easier to choose contrasting or complementing paint colors based on the bedding than vice versa, especially when you have custom paint colors mixed.

Ideas for Walls
Look to skateboard designs for inspiration on decorative painting techniques. It doesn’t have to be complicated; instead, paint on a few diagonal, vertical or horizontal stripes in bold accent colors. Use a stencil to apply a silhouette of a skater in action. For an urban look, do a grungy, graffiti accent wall with a wallpaper mural. You can also use faux painting techniques to give the wall an industrial finish that simulates rusted metal or concrete. Start with a medium-gray or blue-gray base and sponge on lighter and darker gray glaze colors, or use a reddish-brown glaze for rust.

Skateboard Shelves
Heavily used skateboards eventually wear out, but put the boards to good use as accents and furnishings in a bedroom, such as a skateboard wall shelf supported by L brackets. Space the brackets to fit in between the front and back wheel trucks on the board. The brackets can be screwed into the bottom of the board, or you can attach the brackets to the wall first and simply rest the board on the bracket arms. The trucks and wheels can be removed if you want to use just the deck. Drill holes through the deck to hang it by rope or make multi-level shelves with metal rods and additional decks,

Other Skateboard Accents
Worn-out skateboard or skateboard parts provide more material for decor. Skateboard decks transform to become ceiling fan blades. A board with a colorful design underneath makes a hanging pendant light, or convert a grouping of boards into eye-catching picture frames. Skateboard decks can be made into table lamps, chairs and stools. Attach the trucks and wheels under a small bookcase or nightstand to make it portable or mount the trucks to the wall to serve as hat or backpack hooks.
