How to Do a Chocolate Brown & Blue Living Room

Upon first glance, a chocolate brown and blue color palette for a living room seem to leave little freedom for variation. However, a large number of shades of blue can be paired with chocolate brown, ranging from the lightest baby blue to a deeper teal hue. Also, a living room with white walls and chocolate brown and blue accents throughout looks notably different than one bathed in light shades of blue and dark brown accents. Plan well ahead and keep a bulletin board or look book with patterns, textures and pieces that inspire you to ensure a balanced and well decorated room.

Things You'll Need

  • Paint strips
  • Paint
  • Paintbrushes and trays
  • Rugs
  • Furniture
  • Throw pillows
  • Blankets
  • Window treatments
  • Accent pieces

Visit the paint section at a hardware or department store and study the different shades of chocolate brown and blue there. Chocolate browns range from medium-dark to very dark, so this is likely to be the darkest color in your palette. Pair potential blues with the chocolate browns, experimenting with light pastels or bolder blues. Study how the blue's undertone works with the chocolate brown. For instance, a teal blue creates a much different look from that of a robin's egg blue with the same color.

Collect several paint strips with blues in a variety of intensities and shades. Chocolate brown is typically saturated and does well with lighter shades of blue, but brighter and medium-dark blues can be used for small accent pieces or as the general palette, if you'd like to use brown accents instead.

Study how each paint strip looks in your living room. Paint a small sample onto the wall, if desired, for a better idea of how the color reflects the light there. Decide whether you want to paint the walls a light or darker blue and use chocolate brown as your accent color or incorporate more brown and lighten things up with bright or pastel blues. A darker blue can accent a muted chocolate brown as well. Darker colors tend to close a room up, so lighter walls work well for creating the illusion of a bright, open space. Chocolate brown can work well on an accent wall near a reading nook.

Paint the walls your desired color. Paint an accent wall the opposite color you've chosen for the main area or keep the walls white and go with blue or brown trim for small splashes of color.

Place color-coordinated furniture in your living room. Brown may be easier to find, especially with leather and wood. If your furniture is a different color, bring in small brown or blue pieces, such as a side chair, coffee table or small bookcase.

Reupholster a sofa or armchair with patterns that incorporate blue and chocolate brown. Mix and match patterns with throw pillows or blankets but keep these pieces in the same blue and chocolate brown family you choose, making sure the blue in particular shares the same undertones and doesn't clash with other blues in the room.

Place dark blue, teal or chocolate brown accent pieces around the room. A window shade, vase or table lamp can add weight to your color palette this way. Experiment with a third color or material, such as a silver metal for picture frames, lamps and vases or even a bold red to bring out a lighter blue wall and brown furniture.
