Ideas for a Room With Slanted Walls

Homes with slanted walls are common in older homes, such as bungalows and Tudors. They are less common in modern homes, but when a home has slanted walls, they are often found on the upstairs in rooms that are located right below an attic or under the pitch of the roofline. Slanted walls heighten the interest value of a room. They carve out cozy spots in a kitchen and amplify the design of a bathroom with skylights. Slanted walls give you plenty of creative options to use the shape to add drama and a customized look to the rooms in your home.

Wallpaper
Wallpaper is always a good choice to use on slanted walls. Choices, colors and styles are extensive, and you can even mix and match different patterns. Mixing and matching is actually a good way to add drama to slanted walls. For example, you could use a pink and white striped wallpaper pattern and a floral pattern that is predominately pink and white for a young girl's room. You could combine blue and white polka dots and blue and white stripes in a boy's room or in a nursery. The striped pattern is best on the vertical walls of the room, and the polka dots or florals are best for the slanted wall or even a ceiling.

Fabric
Use fabric to create a romantic effect in a bedroom with slanted walls. Lightweight gauze or mosquito netting can be gathered to create a light and airy look behind a white wrought iron or brass bed. Patterns and florals can either be gathered or adhered to the slanted wall as an option to wallpaper to give the wall a textured effect. Use gingham checks, stripes or florals in polished cotton fabrics to create a cheery effect for a bay window with slanted walls or ceilings in a bedroom or kitchen.

Beadboard
Use beadboard on one or more slanted walls to give the room a cozy, rustic ambiance. Stain and varnish the wood to enhance the patina and give the beadboard a rich quality. Paint other walls in a warm, neutral color, such as eggshell or beige, so that the beadboard becomes the focal point of the room. You may want to have the wood cut diagonally to make the effect even more dramatic. As an option, you can paint the beadboard white to keep the room open and bright.

Shelves
Shelves will give the wall a dual purpose. They will provide utilitarian functions of housing books and accent pieces, and they will play up the slanted structure of the wall. Paint the shelves the same color of the wall for a camouflaged look that accents the contents on the shelves, or stain the shelves to draw attention to the custom design.

Skylights and Windows
Skylights can be added at the top of the wall to let the sunshine in and so you can watch the stars at night. Skylights are favored to create a garden effect in bedrooms and will add a contemporary look to bedrooms, kitchens and living rooms. A slanted wall with a slanted window will make a very stylized and contemporary statement. For example, if the wall has an obtuse, triangular shape, the window could be customized to mimic the shape, running in a floor-to-ceiling fashion. Use a black sash and windowsill to accent the shape.
