How to Decorate the Large Wall Behind My Bed

The wall you position your bed on tends to be the largest wall your bedroom. Since the wall is large and features the main element of a bedroom, it immediately becomes a focal point. Decorations on the wall behind your bed adds visual interest to the space and sets the tone for the decor in the rest of the room. From traditional design elements to modern accents, you can decorate this wall in a variety of ways.

Things You'll Need

  • Pictures
  • Frames
  • Shutters
  • Fabric
  • Shelves
  • Mirrors

Hang a large picture over the bed. Choose a painting or a photograph of a subject that suits the look you want to achieve. For example, a posh room would be well served by a large, black-and-white photo of the Eiffel Tower in a simple black or silver frame, while a painting of the beach in a rustic wood frame suits a seaside-themed bedroom.

Display shutters on the wall. Hang two or three aged shutters on the wall in a vertical manner or in a horizontal column to create an unexpected headboard for your bed. Alternatively, hang a collection of aged shutters both diagonally and vertically over the entire span of the wall, creating a unique work of art.

Drape fabric on the wall behind your bed. Choose a fabric that suits the style of your room; for example, pick red velvet for a regal look or vibrantly printed saris for a bohemian style. Hang the fabric just below the ceiling, and allow it to cascade down the wall.

Install floating shelves on this wall. Lacquered shelves that complement or contrast the color scheme are an option, as are shelves with a natural wood finish. To create the effect of a column, hang the shelves in a vertical line with 8- to 12-inch gaps between them. Alternatively, hang them at random points along the wall. Display collectibles, pictures and books on the floating shelves.

Hang mirrors on the wall. For a country chic or vintage bedroom, choose a large mirror with an antique finish and an ornate frame. Three or four rectangular mirrors hung vertically or horizontally with gaps between them suit a bedroom with a modern style.
