How to Decorate a Man's Living Room
Things You'll Need
- Home decor items
- Paint-optional
Take a look at some of the things the gentleman prefers. If he has hobbies such as hunting or golf, these items may be incorporated into the design theme. If he likes sports such as golf, you can accent the room with antique golf memorabilia. If he likes music such as old classics like Sinatra or a variety of Broadway plays, framed posters can be used as wall accents.
Create a color scheme and stick with it. Not all rooms will need to be painted but in order for decor to really stand out and blend in with a room area, a main color scheme is suggested. Choose from more masculine signature color lines like the Ralph Lauren or Eddie Bauer Paint Collection found at fine home improvement warehouses nationwide such as Home Depot or Lowe's. Reds, blues, browns and greens are popular choices. Accent the room's trim with white.
Shop for items to decorate with. Start by saving money first and exploring second hand and consignment shops for one of a kind treasures. Look for accent furniture that is vintage or that can be easily painted to match the room. Scope second hand shops for vintage books, old fishing tackle, lamps, vintage lockers and masculine table lamps. Stores like IKEA carry masculine decorative accents like the PS HALLAR stool that incorporates a middle eastern design accented with coiled banana fibers and sea grass.
Hang items on the wall. If he likes more of a classic, worldly look, try hanging up framed antique world or marine maps as decor pieces. Accent with small world globes and ships in a bottle on a desk or entertainment center. Utilize shelf space to add picture frames and family heirlooms that you want to showcase such as trophies or a diploma.
Fill in bare areas and accent tables with collectibles and personal items. Place favorite items or antiques on display. A childhood chess set also doubles as decoration when set out on a buffet or coffee table. Add monogrammed pillows and place them on the couch and chairs. For the sportsman, mount game on the wall such as pheasant or deer but do not overpower the room. Choose one or two of his favorite items such as an old softball or Indian collectible he's had since he was a kid and incorporate into the decor by placing items on a shelf or next to the television.
Place magazines or store blankets in large vintage trunks or over-sized wicker baskets to keep the room clutter free. Create a makeshift side table combo with Pottery Barns wooden risers---a grouping of three different sized weathered wooden boxes that add a rustic and masculine vibe to the room.
