How to Remodel Kitchen Countertops

Clean your countertops. Using trisodium phosphate, a degreasing cleaner, wipe the entire countertop surface down with a towel to begin your kitchen countertop remodel. Allow to dry thoroughly.
Apply painter's tape to areas you do not want to paint. To further prepare your kitchen countertops, adhere painter's tape to spaces where the countertops meet the walls, edges and other areas you want to remain paint-free during your project.
Sand countertops. Using 150-grit sandpaper on a mouse sander, lightly sand the entire surface of your countertops and wipe away any sanding residue with a tacky cloth to prepare your kitchen countertops for your remodel project.
Paint countertops with primer. Paint the countertops with an oil-based primer with a small roller and allow to dry at least four hours. The primer seals the surfaces and prepares them for the subsequent coats of faux-finish paints.
Choose three colors for the faux-finishing technique. Select three neutral colors in the same color family such as light beige, medium beige and dark beige for your countertop surface.
Paint the kitchen countertop surfaces with latex paint in the lightest paint hue. To begin the actual faux-finish technique, use a small roller and roll on a coat of the lightest color paint until all the countertops are covered. Allow to dry.
Mix medium and dark color paint with glaze. In two separate containers, mix approximately three parts paint to one part glaze for the medium paint and dark paints. Depending on the desired result, use more or less glaze for a paint mixture that is softly muted and has extended drying properties.
Apply medium color to the kitchen countertops. Dip sea sponge in the medium paint with glaze and blot off excess onto a paper plate. Gently blot paper sponge in up and down motions on top of the base coat of paint, making sure to leave some base coat areas visible throughout. Dry thoroughly.
Apply darkest color to countertops. Dip sea sponge in the darkest color hue with glaze, then blot and apply in up and down motions over the medium blotted areas and the base coat, making sure to let the other colors show through. Allow to dry 24 hours.
Paint the countertop surfaces with two coats of polyacrylic top coat. Using a short nap roller, apply two thin coats of polyacrylic top coat, allowing them to dry thoroughly between applications. Your kitchen countertop renovation is complete for years of enjoyment.
