How to Put a Swing in Your Bedroom

There are many reasons to hang a swing in your bedroom, but regardless of the reason, you must make sure the swing is safely installed to prevent injury to anyone using the swing. If you do not fasten the swing to the ceiling correctly, you risk the swing tearing out of the ceiling. You can install a swing in your bedroom in a matter of an hour or so, using basic household tools.

Things You'll Need

  • Stud finder
  • Tape measure
  • Hand drill
  • Drill bit
  • Eye bolts
  • Large screwdriver

Measure the width of the swing from the eye bolt on the left armrest to the eye bolt on the right armrest, and write down the measurement.

Locate the joists in your ceiling, using an electronic stud finer. Locate two joists that run parallel to each other. The joist spacing should be relatively close to the spacing between the eye bolts on the swing. If the spacing is not within 1 or 2 inches, you will use a single joist to mount the swing. However, it is best to distribute the load evenly over two joists if possible.

Mark the mounting locations on the joists with a pencil. Space the marks the same distance apart as the measurement you took in Step 1. This will ensure that the chain or rope hangers are parallel to each other.

Drill a pilot hole though the joists, using a hand drill and a drill bit that measures half the diameter of the eye bolts you will use to secure the swing to the ceiling.

Thread the eye bolts into the joist as far as you can with your fingers. Place a screwdriver in the hole of the eye bolt and turn the screwdriver clockwise. This will allow you to thread the eye bolts into the joist completely.

Attach the chain or rope hangers to the eye bolts on the swing, and then attach the other end of the hangers to the eye bolts in the ceiling. The exact process for attaching them will vary, depending on the type of swing you purchased. However, in most cases, they simply snap onto the eye bolts.
