Make a Mini Zen Garden

Zen gardens are Japanese rock gardens that add a unique, aesthetic appeal to the landscape. They are said to help relax and heal the mind, body and soul, and have been used in miniature versions in the home or at the office. Zen gardens were originally created as a meditation aid and for teaching spiritual principles. The sand in the garden represents water, the rake designs symbolizing the ripples in the water. Making your own miniature Zen garden is not a difficult task and only requires the use of a few items.

Pour sand into a small box until it is filled just below the top of the box. This can be an old jewelry box or just a small, square box that you purchased from a craft store. The sand should be made from crushed granite and should be beige, gray or white in color.

Add four or five small, polished rocks on top of the sand inside the box. These rocks add a classic look to the garden and can be grouped all together or separately depending on the design that you want in your mini Zen garden.

Rake the sand using a fork or a comb to create a design. The design can go around the rocks or can be a large circle, square or other geometric shape.

Add a small bridge if you like. Bridges are often found in full-scale Japanese Zen gardens.
