Ideas of Furniture to Place in Front of a Large Living Room Window

Large windows can be a welcome architectural element in any room. However, designing your interior furnishings around them can be a challenge. An important detail to consider is how you want the window to fit in with the rest of the room. Enjoying the view, letting the light pour in or using the area for seating or storage are all factors that need to be considered.

Low Shelving
Placing a low shelf in front of a window adds storage space to your room without disrupting the light flow. You could use the lower portion for book storage and the upper shelves for plants. If you need to take advantage of the storage space for odd-and-ends, use baskets to hold small and sometimes disorganized items. If you do not need the storage space, consider placing throw pillows on the shelves to add color to the room.

Open Shelving
Placing a tall but backless shelf or etagere in front of a window is smart if you want to create some privacy while still allowing sunlight in the room. Fill the shelves with colored glass objects like vases to add color without obstructing light. Plants would also add nice texture and warmth to the room and would look graphic against bright light.

Chaise Longue
A chaise longue is a perfectly sized furniture piece to place under a window. Chaises typically have low backs and sit close to the ground, so they won’t block the light coming in from the window. Also, their rectangular proportions mimic the proportions of many windows.

Sitting Area
You can create an intimate seating arrangement with two modern lounge chairs placed in front of a window and facing each other. Modern-styled furniture is modestly scaled, which will keep the chairs from seeming bulky or awkward against the window. Add a small occasional table and lamp between the chairs to complete the arrangement. Unlike the chaise or shelving options, this set-up will establish a new, inviting conversational area in the room.

Long Bench
A bench is a highly versatile piece of furniture for any room, especially under a window. You can use it as a shelf or as seating. During the day it can hold plants and in the evening, you can move the plants and use the bench for sitting and reading. Additionally, you can use the space underneath the bench for storage. Buy a set of baskets to hold miscellaneous items or store books directly on the floor with the aid of simple bookends.

Art Display
Put a favorite piece of artwork on display by resting it on a wooden easel in front of a window. This is a cost-effective way to create a striking focal point in a room, and it is easy to move when you want to change your furniture arrangement.
